Zurich zoo welcomes Farha.

Asian elephant Farha--whose name means joy and luck--came into the world May 3 just before 9:00, after a delivery that took only a few minutes. She is the seventh Asian elephant born at the zoo, and the sixth born to her mother, Ceyla Himali.

With the support of other elephants she was standing in seven minutes. It is important that newborn elephants get to their mother's nutrient-rich milk as soon as possible. She took her first tentative steps escorted by the other elephants, the zoo says in an announcement of the big event.

"We were quite surprised that the calf was born amid the group (of elephants) outside the elephant house. The whole group made a tight circle around the calf. The other elephants then escorted the baby on its first shaky steps."
