Perception versus reality

When people think of Zug they tend to think first about its low rate of taxation! But how did this situation come about? Michael van Orsouw (a historian in Zug) addressed that point in his article concerning the relationship between Zurich and Zug. He claimed that without Zug's close geographical proximity to Zurich, the canton may not have developed as quickly and as successfully as it has.

In the 19th century, Zurich built numerous factories close to Zug and steadily developed its holding in the industrial field. Pressure mounted for Zurich's lawyers to create more attractive tax rates for companies domiciled within Zurich. This proved impossible. However, the same revised legislation was able to be put into effect in Zug, thereby opening up a most lucrative trade in holding and domicile businesses.

Throughout the 19th and 20th centuries, Zug attracted scores of international businesses. The influx continues and Zug's impressive growth, particularly over the past 40 years, speaks for itself. The population has doubled, the number of available workplaces has tripled and resident companies have grown tenfold, making Zug's business world strong and attractive to companies from a wide variety of different fields.

Zug is proud to offer short, direct communication routes. Whether a company is considering the pre-move administrative activities, or an established company needs the help of the Economic Promotion team, they will find a wealth of information readily available from the first contact--a classic example of Zug's friendliness to businesses both new and old.

The first step for an entrepreneur considering Zug as a potential new location for his business is to set up a meeting with the Economic Promotion team. However, he or she may be surprised to find representatives from the Department of Economic Affairs, the Commercial Registry and the tax department at the same meeting, all ready to look at the case and offer professional advice.

Zug is well-connected

Situated in the centre of Switzerland and the centre of Europe, you are rarely more than a few hours away from a different country, a different culture, a different language or a different climate. With regular direct rail connections to Zurich Airport the world really is your oyster. If you prefer to travel by train, let one of Europe's great cities be your destination.

Getting from one end of Switzerland to the other by car couldn't be easier given the convergence of motorways on the outskirts of Zug--so whether you fancy a steaming bowl of Bundner Gerstensuppe, a chewy piece of Basler Lackerli, a crisp Schaffhauser Zungen, a hearty Buseca Ticinese or a savoury Papet Vaudois, the choice is yours.

And of course, from Zug you can be in downtown Lucerne or Zurich within about 30 minutes and thus also easily participate in all the cultural activities that these two larger towns have to offer.
