The new year always brings with it with a keen awareness of change. This year, we are considering all the sweeping changes under way around the globe, thanks to the theme for the 2014 World Economic Forum in Davos: Reshaping the World.

For elaboration on these changes, we looked to the United Nations and to business. The heads of two UN agencies based in Geneva--the Economic Commission for Europe and the Conference for Trade & Development (pp12-14 and pp15-17 respectively)--gave graciously of their valuable time to share with us the nature of their work and how they are experiencing, and indeed driving, global change.

I noticed that two words came up again and again in these interviews: security and inequality ... and the links between the two. Both men are strongly focused on the need to improve lives of the poorest among us, as the United Nations as a whole ponders the future beyond the Millennium Development Goals. Looking past those goals for 2015, a recent UN online consultation with the public on the subject of "The World We Want" turned up the recurring theme of reducing inequality. Evidently this is a burning issue for many, as shown by reactions to the international Occupy movement--even such institutions as Los Angeles City Council and the executive director of financial stability at the Bank of England have expressed sympathy, if not outright support, for the protestors.

Here in Switzerland, those same concerns are hot topics. New president Didier Burkhalter (p19) has stressed stability and security in public...
