Natural population growth--the difference between births and deaths--is at its highest peak since the early 1990s.

While a 4.6 per cent decline in deaths in 2004 may be partly explained by the deadly heat wave in the summer of 2003, life expectancy has been on a fairly steady rise. It rose by six months last year, and now stands at 78.6 years for men and 83.7 years for women.
