An ever-increasing number of virus attacks and spam emails are costing the Swiss economy an estimated CHF5 billion (S3.9 billion) annually.

According to the scientists at the Federal Institute of Technology, (FIT) in Zurich, about two-thirds of all emails worldwide are either unwanted or harm the recipient.

Says Bernhard Plattner of the Federal Institute of Technology in Zurich, "If every one of the 1.73 million employees working in IT in Switzerland spends five minutes a day soiling out infected mails aid spam mails, it amounts to a loss of about CHF2,300 per year per employee."

Companies also invest an average of CHF1 billion a year in hardware and software in order to brace themselves against virus attacks, according to Plattner.

"The total damage could amount to CHF 5 billion every year in Switzerland."
