The United States is demanding that it be allowed to review a Swiss contract for natural gas supplies from Iran to see whether it violates American sanctions against Tehran.

The 25-year contract for natural gas, valued at SFr 28 to SFr 42 billion, calls for Iranian gas deliveries to Switzerland beginning in 2009.

The contract was signed in March. Washington had already objected to the deal as a violation of the spirit of UN sanctions against the country, and made a formal request to see the fine print on the day it was signed.
