Treat yourself to a retreat.

A yearly retreat should be booked into the calendar, just like your dog's grooming and winter tyre changing. Finding time for your own maintenance is as vital as all the other day-to-day tasks.

We always knew retreats were fabulous, but in sitting down with Nicole Gibbard, the regional fitness manager of six Silhouette health clubs, we learned what a difference they can really make. These are her top five reasons to make your escape a priority.

  1. A retreat provides a goal. Booking a retreat often encourages you to reflect on your diet, your wardrobe and your fitness, and the benefits can start way before the trip even begins!

  2. Discover a new way of living. By immersing yourself for a while in specialized retreats, you get the full-on benefits of a totally different way of eating, exercising and thinking.

  3. A retreat provides endless possibilities to reorganize your priorities. Fresh air, great food, rest, exercise and trying new things while supported by experienced teachers all give you the energy to return home with a host of ideas for how to change your daily routine and incorporate the parts of your retreat that you really enjoyed into your life at home.

  4. Meeting new people with similar interests is one of the most wonderful ways to break out of your shell. Talking is therapy, and to be able to laugh and share your innermost feelings is one of the best ways to begin to let go of old issues and create space for new opportunities.
