Top earning Swiss have less purchasing power.

According to the findings of a recent international labour market comparison by the Swiss Federal Statistical Office; the Swiss start work at an earlier age, retire at a later age and are paid more than most in Europe.

The data from 2002 showed that the average salary of a full-time earner in Switzerland was 50,000 Euro (SFr75,000), while the average full-time employee in Norway, Denmark, Britain and Germany earned around 40,000. The French and the Austrians earned less than 30,000, and the average Italian employee picked up only 21,000 Euro.

The statistics were based on data gathered before the European Union's recent expansion from 15 to 25 countries and from the European Free Trade Association (Efta) countries; Switzerland, Iceland, Liechrenstein and Norway that are not EU members.

Another interesting finding concerned women in part-time employment in Switzerland. While the proportion of people in Switzerland in part-time employment stood at 31.5 per cent and was only second to that of the Netherlands (45 per cent.)...
