A thorn in the side of international diplomacy, WikiLeaks is responsible for putting a world of sensitive and embarrassing state communications firmly into the public domain. Few countries have escaped the attention of WikiLeaks or its editor, Australian-born Julian Assange--with the United States, China and Switzerland among the many countries to be embarrassed by the website's revelations.

Now, with the world's governments increasingly keen to silence Assange, the Swiss bank, PostFinance, has become an unwitting participant in the controversy surrounding WikiLeaks. This was following revelations to the NZZ am Sonntag newspaper that the website's founder and editor held an account with the bank. PostFinance spokesperson Marc Audrey confirmed that Assange himself had set up the account, which was listed under the name 'Julian Paul Assange, Geneve'. According to WikiLeaks, the account held donations, intended to cover the costs of defending Assange and his employees.

Although Assange appeared to fulfil all the criteria at the time of opening his account (before his current notoriety), a PostFinance investigation has since discovered that the Australian falsely claimed that he was a Geneva resident in his application. Under PostFinance's terms of business, proof of residence in Switzerland is a prerequisite for opening an account with the bank.
