The right to dual citizenship.

Following last month's results of the recent popular vote that effectively threw out proposals to case citizenship restrictions, the rightwing Swiss People's Party is now seeking to tighten the rules regarding dual nationality.

The People's Party leaders want parliament to repeal the 1992 law on dual citizenship, which allows newly naturalised citizens to keep their old passports.

The populist movement is keeping a promise made to voters in its current political programme issued in 2003. "You cannot buy Swiss citizenship, it must be a real and conscious choice," reads the manifesto.

Swiss abroad affected

The Organisation of the Swiss Abroad (OSA) is among the critics of the proposals likely to affect up to 434,000 dual citizens living abroad and sees it as a major step backwards.
