A friend of mine asked me recently whether it is appropriate to wear lace at work. I replied that a little goes a long way. "What about pink?" she continued. I replied that Christine Lagarde wore a pink scarf for her first press conference as Managing Director of the International Monetary Fund (IMF). In fact, the first woman to head the IMF has brought both panache and flair to conservative business dressing. Over the last few years, there has been a gradual shift in the way women dress for work. Think Michelle Obama, Oprah Winfrey, Anna Wintour, and even the Duchess of Cambridge. These women are not afraid that they won't be taken seriously at the workplace if they show a little interest in fashion. Their style choices exude confidence, courage and vitality when it comes to communicating power and success. In Switzerland, it is interesting to find out what the local designers offer women in business. I have picked two designers who break the office style rules in the most charming and covetable way.

Timeless elegance with Dorothee Vogel

Designer Dorothee Vogel says she pursues a vision of fashion that transcends mere fleeting looks. She is based in Zurich.

What is your design philosophy?

Dorothee Vogel: I know that self-confident women who cultivate a style of their own desire clothes that will be a part of their lives for a long time--not just trendy items that submit to the dictates of fashion, but unique pieces with a timeless elegance and simplicity that never fails to seduce.

How would you define style?

Dorothee Vogel: Style is the interpretation of self-confidence in the way you dress up.

Is there room for fashion in the corporate world? Are stylish women at work taken seriously in the corporate world? Dorothee Vogel: Yes of course, but only in the context of 'less is more'. This statement definitely should not apply to quality, however.
