The MBA (Master of Business Administration) is a graduate management degree, preparing professionals for managerial responsibility by studying the theory and application of business management processes. For those with more leadership there is also the option to enrol on an Executive MBA (EMBA) course.

With more people taking an MBA than any other postgraduate course it is an important, and necessary, step in an individual's career. Even taking into consideration the economic crisis, over recent years the demand for employees with MBAs and Executive MBAs continues to increase worldwide and across sectors.

The technology sector has the need for professionals to commercialise their products, finance centres are increasingly hiring younger, recently graduated, MBA holder and the energy sector is hiring in preparation of having to replace retiring senior executives in the next 10 years.

Skills and networking

Recruiters are increasingly recognising the importance of an MBA and the desire of their clients to hire employees with an MBA. The newly acquired skills lend themselves to a variety of sectors and positions, widening the potential opportunities when seeking employment and increasing the chance that recruiters will take a risk on those with less experience. The MBA gives the graduate a great overview of the business world and an understanding of the organic nature of the business environment. This is not usually possible as an employer as your knowledge base is usually restricted to what is relevant to the company or position. MBA students find that they gain the ability to see old problems from a new perspective and create new strategies to solve them.

It is not only what is learnt that is of value to the MBA student. The networking opportunities in an MBA are an important asset before and after graduation. For many this vast professional network is more important than the education itself. Students have access to their colleagues, faculty heads and lecturers, who are experienced professionals, and alumni, from which there is a wealth of knowledge, expertise and experience to be tapped in to. Often students find themselves securing a high-end job without the need for recruiters, just by utilising their newly acquired network.
