Founded in 1913, the Rhatische Bahn is one of the highest travelling-trains in Europe. The. Swiss railway also has the longest history and tradition, as well as being-a leader in innovation. This summer the railway celebrated its 100th anniversary and in honour of its Engadin line--the first to become electrified--an entire weekend of celebration was organized throughout the canton.

Connecting far flung villages

The railway's groundbreaking innovation--connecting villages in a remote valley--made an entire region accessible to tourism and thereby opened up a new economic branch. The line connects the far ends of the valley, from the village of Bever to Scoul-Tarasp close to the border of Italy.

The entire canton of Graubunden celebrated along with the Rhatische Bahn. Swiss traditions were on full display as men and women dressed up in traditional Swiss costumes. Big bands were in full swing, performing at the train stations and in town, and extra trains were scheduled across all routes for the Weekend celebration.

Old-timer trains back on the rails

On Saturday night of the celebration weekend, four historic trains were reintroduced as a special treat. In the past, these diesel-fuelled locomotives increased the security and productivity of the building of train tracks. In the future, they will serve again as working locomotives. The trains will once again serve as repair trains, providing traction when heavy snow and ice sets in along the mountainous Engadin tracks. These antique locomotives...
