The ongoing tax dispute with the European Union has deepened Swiss opposition to future membership.

Only 45 per cent of respondents think Switzerland should join the EU in the long term.

That's down from an average of around 50 per cent in recent years, according to the poll published in the Sonntags Zeitung newspaper.

Last month we mentioned that Switzerland is also under fire from France for taxing many rich foreigners based on expenses rather than income.
