Switzerland's competitive edge is still sharp, as evidenced by the country's successful defence of its number-four position among the world's most competitive nations, according to the 2009 ranking compiled by the IMD Global Business School in Lausanne.

The just-released IMD World Competitive Yearbook compared 57 nations around the globe by taking statistical indicators like GDP growth, investment flow, labour market strength and private consumption levels into account. Only the United States, Hong Kong and Singapore landed ahead of Switzerland, respectively, in the 2009 ranking. Among these elite, the only change from 2008 was a swap between Hong Kong and Singapore for the number-two slot, with Hong Kong snatching the lead.
