According to a report published in the Tages-Anzeiger, almost 4,300 Swiss army service-weapons went missing between the years 1969 and 2009. Of the 4,674 weapons reported missing to army officials, only 351 were found--although, since the article's publication, a further five have turned up. Army spokesman Christoph Brunner told the Tages-Anzeiger that in most cases, the weapons went missing when soldiers were off duty and in the civilian environment.

The article reports that the army reported particularly high weapon losses in 1995 and 2004--both periods in which reforms led to abnormally high numbers of soldiers being released from the army. A breakdown of 2008 figures shows that 80 per cent of weapon disappearances were the result of theft, with loss accounting for 10 per cent. Alarmingly...
