The Swiss have qualified for the World Cup for the first time since 1994 and the eighth time in tournament history.

"All football fans, and those who might become fans, are feverish with impatience for the World Cup next summer," then-President Samuel Schmid said after the November qualifier.

Switzerland qualified despite a playoff loss in Istanbul that snapped a 14-match unbeaten streak. It qualified despite losing to Turkey because it scored more away goals in the two playoff games.

The Swiss won the first playoff game 2-0 at home, lost 4-2 in Istanbul, but advanced to the World Cup tournament in Germany with the series tally at 4-4.
