The Swiss believe gun sales should be more strictly controlled, and increasing numbers would support a death penalty. But they do not feel less safe than they did in 1999, according to a Univox study.

Findings are of particular interest after a study by Zurich's GfS research institute and Lausanne's Institute of Criminology and Penal Law showed a 46 per cent rise in injuries sustained through crime in the same time period.

The Univox study found that the number of people who don't feel safe walking alone near home at night, 20 per cent of women and six percent of men, has dropped by more than a third since 1999.
