Despite the challenging global economic climate, Swiss International Airlines has bucked industry trends and posted a profit for the third quarter of 2009.

The Lufthansa daughter company achieved a respectable 47 million franc operating profit for the period of June to September 2009, despite reduced demand for first and business class seats, and fare erosion.

This figure represents a 61 per cent drop in operating profits compared to the equivalent period last year. In response to weakened demand, the company has reduced the number of flights it offers by five per cent since the beginning of 2009.
