The watchdog of the Swiss postal service says the Swiss Post is "massively overcharging" for postage stamps and called for liberalisation of the market--a move also supported by Swiss Economics Minister Doris Leuthard.

Martin Kaiser of the Postal Services Regulation Authority said the Swiss pay some of the highest prices in Europe for letters weighing up to 20 grams.

That's about 90 per cent of letters, Kaiser said.

Government-owned Swiss Post pulled in SFr 900 million in profits last year.

Kaiser said postal costs are lower than the Post claims, but added that regulators have no authority to reduce prices, "that lies with [Communications Minister Moritz] Leuenberger".
