The number of patients seeking compensation for medical malpractice has risen significantly over the past decade, according to Swiss insurance companies.

According to Swiss insurer, Zurich Financial Services (ZFS), premiums for medical institutions and professionals have tripled since 1994 to cover the cost of patients' claims.

Each year, Swiss insurers deal with around 2,000 claims relating to medical errors, such as botched operations,

"The number of claims [against medical professionals] has more than doubled over the pass 10 years," says Sascha Humbeli, a specialist in insurance for hospitals at ZFS.

This amounts to CHF30 million ($24 million) in insurance...
