You've heard of Switzerland's role in developing the smart car but how about the smart card? An Aarau-based firm is making an international name in smart cards, pumping out more than 100 million plastic cards a year for credit, debit, driver's permits or other ID.

Recently it booked orders for 42 million 'smart' drivers licenses to be supplied to Great Britain and 10 million laminated passports for Hong Kong and the former Czechoslovakia.
