Some women members of parliament from the main political parties want to change the constitution to make all-day school available throughout Switzerland. The goal is to give more parents the option to work full-time.

Currently the vast majority of Swiss schools in German and French Switzerland close for lunch with the expectation that children return home to eat. Studies have shown that this makes it difficult for parents to juggle work and family life. Critics also say many single parents are forced to rely on social welfare because childcare obligations prevent them from finding suitable work.
