The ALDEN has seemingly magical proportions. The intimate corridors of Zurich's smallest five-star hotel are something of a contrast to its grand suites, which measure upwards of 60 square metres. Rooms are romantic and full of contradictions. A rather surprising, bright red door leads into my suite, which has stuccowork on the ceiling. An antique wooden bookcase stands opposite two contemporary canvases by Swiss artist, Jacques Laissue. A flat-screen TV neighbours a grandfather clock. Fuss-free decor, in beige and cream hues, creates tranquility; splashes of mustard yellow and gold set off by ornate oil paintings--lend a regal air. Spacious bathrooms with Carrara marble floors, sparse furnishings and high ceilings provide an indulgent touch. Each bathtub has a whirlpool facility. It is easy to forget where you are.

The bar downstairs transports you to the Hollywood of the 1950s, with black-and-white, vintage glamour artwork by Thomas Irniger adorning the walls. Meanwhile, the restaurant 'ALDEN' serves Mediterranean dishes. I sample salmon, served on a bed of spinach, with homemade tortellini. Service is non-intrusive and you are left in peace to enjoy your meal. Indulging in the hotel's continental breakfast in your room (instead of the breakfast room) is as satisfying as slipping into a cashmere pullover. Fresh juices, fruit and pastries are delivered promptly at a time of your choosing. The hotel is tucked into a maze of streets, close to Zurich's Bahnhof Enge, but it is very quiet: a prescription of luxury after the rush of the city--but be sure to have a wallet to match. The ALDEN is the home of tycoons, lords and ladies.
