According to a survey, eight out of 10 Swiss feel safe in their country and are generally optimistic about Switzerland's future. At the same time, the percentage of people who thought their personal safety had been threatened doubled from last year's figure to 22 per cent.

Anti-United States sentiment remains strong, with less than 20 per cent coming out in favour of Washington's lead over Iraq.

Nearly all those questioned were pacifists--nine out of ten were overwhelmingly in favour of preventing war at all costs.

The survey also indicated that there were signs of the Swiss becoming more outward-looking than in the previous years.
