This country's dog owners will have to take courses and pass tests if they want to keep their pets, the Swiss government announced in April.

An examination on how to properly look after the dog will be introduced in September, along with a practical test to demonstrate control over the animal. Current owners will have two years to take the courses. In 2010 it will be necessary to pass the theory exam in order to keep any kind of dog.

The federal decision on dogs was part of a wider law on the protection of animals, which also requires a course for any farmer who keeps more than three pigs, five horses, ten sheep, 150 hens or 200...
