According to Swiss accident insurer SUVA, cyclists who ride while listening to music through earphones are putting themselves and other road users at increased risk. The insurer calculated that whereas a cyclist without earphones is able to hear a 50 km/h danger approaching from behind when it is still 16 metres away--in the case of a cyclist listening to music on head phones at 80 dB, this distance shrinks to just three metres. This gives the cyclist just 0.3 seconds to react...
