Traffic noise in Switzerland is driving residents crazy, literally--based on results from the first-ever federal road, rail and air traffic noise pollution study conducted.

According to findings just published by the Federal Office for the Environment (FOEN), 1.2 million--or 16 per cent--of the Swiss population is seriously impacted by daytime road traffic noise, reported the Tages-Anzeiger daily newspaper. Nighttime figures are slightly lower, with 10 per cent of the population affected.

Noise is considered harmful or irritating when it reaches 55 to 70 decibels during the day, and 45 to 60 decibels at night.
