Following the first major fare adjustment in three years, the cost of Swiss rail and Postbus journeys is set to increase by an average of 5.9 per cent. The price rises, planned to take effect in December 2010, are likely to hit passengers hard-especially users of General Abonnement (GA) and Half-fare cards, who will see the price of a one-year Half-fare card rise by SFr 15 to SFr 165.

It is slightly better news for anybody purchasing season tickets for particular journeys-such as a commute between Lausanne and Geneva--as the SBB has capped the price increase on such tickets at 2.4 per cent, instead of their originally planned 3.4 per cent, largely thanks to protests from the Swiss Federal Price Watchdog.
