The Swiss Guard received a special thank-you from Pope Benedict XVI before the annual swearing-in ceremony on May 6.

The pope told the 31 recruits that the Swiss Guard had allowed popes to do their job for centuries while enjoying a sense of security. Recruits are always sworn in on May 6, marking the day in 1527 when 147 Swiss Guards died while protecting Pope Clement VII during the sacking of Rome.

Pope Benedict described the 110-strong Swiss Guard as a "small army with great ideals. In serving the pope, yon serve the whole church."
