Get into the Orbit: Swiss News takes a quick look at what lies ahead at Orbit/Comdex 2003.

With the plungeing economy, this year's Orbit/Comdex, too, lacks its usual levels of enthusiasm and punch. However, the show must go on.

Dodging around difficult times, Orbit/Comdex 2003 is set to open on September 24th and run through till the 27th. However, registrations from some renowned companies in the IT industry are still pending. As of early August, only some 169 exhibitors had confirmed their registrations for a total area of 10,250 square metres. These included Microsoft, IBM (Partnerworld), Swisscom, Ascom, Simpex, Abacus and Antodesk. This level of registrations clearly was below the expectations of the organisers.

Many of last year's exhibitors will not participate in the exhibition this year. "Particularly when the economy is in a difficult phase, it is harder than ever for companies to present themselves in a good setting and to show market presence," states Kurt Frischknecht, Chief Operating Officer of Swiss Exhibition. "The Swiss IT industry needs an extensive possibility for presentation. We of Orbit/Comdex provide them with a suitable platform, on which it can show itself as an important factor in the economy. After all, we believe in the future of the IT industry with an expected turnover of more than CHF 15 billion," he emphasizes in a press release issued by the authorities. And based on this conviction, Swiss Exhibition is prepared to continue investing in Orbit/Comdex and to proceed with the event in 2003.
