The beginning of March sees the launch of the latest generation Swiss passport. On the surface, it appears very similar to the previous version; however, the difference lies in the inclusion of a chip, which supplements printed personal information with electronically stored personal and biometric data. This tenth incarnation of the passport will enable Swiss citizens to continue travelling freely to the United States without the need for a visa, as well as making passport forgery and manipulation considerably more difficult. All new passports issued after March 1, 2010 will be in the new format. Passports issued prior to this date will remain valid until their expiry date.

By introducing biometric data to passports, Swiss authorities are following a worldwide trend for improved passport security, which arose in the wake of the 9/11 terrorist attacks on the United States.

Each data chip will store a portrait of the passport holder, together with personal details and the prints of both index fingers. This will enable border control personnel worldwide to check that a passport's digital and printed information match, hopefully making the control process easier...
