Swiss International Air Lines has announced a loss of SFr 178 million for 2005--r 38 million more than the previous year.

But the company says passenger numbers rose for the first time since it was established in 2002 and operating margins improved, year on year. Factors include about SFr 100 million in restructuring costs and currency adjustments, it says.

Swiss was formed from the remains of bankrupt national carrier Swissair and regional carrier Crossair, and was purchased by Lufthansa last year.
