A policy of closer ties with the European Union appears to be gaining support in Switzerland.

The 2005 report on security and military' issues published by the Federal Institute of Technology this month, found 57 per cent of people surveyed would accept closer EU ties, although only 40 per cent would support joining the EU.

About 1,200 Swiss were surveyed, across all language regions at the end of January. "Swiss citizens vouch more frequently for Europe without favouring an EU membership." said study authors. But fewer support a full-fledge EL membership than in the late 1990s, when half of people surveyed were in favour.
