For years, beekeepers and conservationists have struggled to understand what could be causing the global decline in bee populations. Notwithstanding the usual suspects of intensive farming and loss of habitat, bee populations have fallen alarmingly in recent years.

Now, thanks to a Swiss researcher at the Ecole Polytechnique Federale (EPFL) in Lausanne, we may be close to unravelling the mystery. In a series of 83 experiments, Daniel Favre, a former-biologist with the institute, proved that mobile phone signals have a direct effect on bee behaviour.
