Swiss recently lowered fares on dozens of European routes in an effort to revitalise the carrier's survival chances. However, the plan backfired as expanding sales of low-frills budget "has been partially blamed for a CHF613 million (9463 million) loss in the nine months to September 2003.

Although the new fares have boosted passenger numbers, the airline's revenue per seat tall more than 10.7 per cent in 3Q compared to the same period last year.
