Insurers will be given access to genetic tests, but only in cases involving large life insurance policies. The Parliament approved of this provision as part of a series of proposals designed to tighten legislation on genetic testing for hereditary diseases.

The law aims to head off potential abuses and, at the same time, protect the rights of individuals. The testing would only be carried out with the individual's consent and only if ordered by a doctor. Also, the individual has the right to refuse to know the results of a test.

At the same time, the law prevents employers from screening staff, other than in cases where there might be a risk, such as with pilots.
