Swiss voters overwhelmingly rejected an initiative that was expected to make it harder for foreigners to gain citizenship. All but one of Switzerland's 26 cantons rejected the initiative by the nationalistic Swiss People's Party; countrywide, 63.8 per cent voted against it.

The initiative was aimed at overturning a Supreme Court ruling that barred the widely denounced practice of subjecting citizenship applications to secret ballots and popular votes by Swiss communities.
