Switzerland's federal railway company SBB has announced a whopping 25 per cent increase in its earnings for the first six months of 2010.

When Iceland's mighty (and mightily unpronounceable) Eyjafjallajokull volcano erupted in April covering much of Europe with a thick cloud of ash, it caused a widespread shutdown of the continent's airspace, grounding planes and creating general mayhem for around 10 million travellers worldwide.

With aviation hubs in Europe closed, national train and ferry companies stepped in to take on the strain--and the profits. As stranded travellers, tired of spending day after-day on airport floors, eventually decided to utilise other modes of transport to reach their final...
