We've seen carbon trading, new technologies and even protective covers splayed across Alpine ski slopes, but German researchers at Johannes Gutenberg University in Mainz have a new proposal they hope will soften the impact of climate change. They've set up a huge screen to trap cold air over the icy mass that is Switzerland's Rhone glacier.

Fifteen metres long and three metres high, the screen was erected mid-glacier for much of August by 27 students from the Mainz University. Monitoring has shown that the glacier in Valais is shrinking by seven metres a year: The "wind catcher" could slow or even stop the thaw, they say.
