Rare crystals have been unearthed during construction of a new rail tunnel through the Lotschberg in canton Bern. Scientists believe that the discoveries could help boost understanding of conditions in the Alps millions of years ago.

This tunnel, which is the second to be built through the Lotschberg in western Switzerland, forms part of a transalpine rail link between Germany and Italy.
