Due to the eager anticipation of springtime and warmer days around the Swiss News office, a sunny theme emerged in this issue. First up, we look to the sun's awesome potential to power our planet. Swiss pioneer Bertrand Piccard and his Solar Impulse team have spent the past seven years developing a solar-powered airplane, in which he intends to circumnavigate the earth in 2013. He hopes this exploit will inspire more people to be energy efficient and make climate protection a bigger priority. And of course, the technology they harness could drive massive advances in clean energy. Follow their flight on page 12.

You'll need to don your walking boots, as we move from solar potential to solar reality. High in the mountains above Zermatt, the Federal Institute of Technology (ETH) has given the Monte Rosa Hut a green makeover. From heating through solar panels to filter-cleaned snowmelt for the toilets, this hut is the peak of eco-friendly accommodation ... and the views are pretty good too (page 26)!
