Freedom of religion. Enjoyed by multitudes around the world, it is a human right sometimes taken for granted. Yet a standard architectural feature of most mosques--the minaret--has ignited a nationwide debate on religious freedom in Switzerland, which will culminate in a national referendum this November. We preview the particulars of the proposed minaret ban on page 8--who's behind it, who's not, why and why not--plus review the recent referendum decision to increase VAT rates in 2011 (page 10).

Stark elegance. Bold refine. Solid grace. Incongruities? No. They are the serenely majestic designs of Swiss architect Peter Zumthor. His architectural angles may not provoke political controversy, but their daring did inspire the Pritzker Architecture Prize Jury to grant him with architecture's highest international honour. Employing the most basic of materials--wood, stone, glass--Zumthor extracts the essence from each, and infuses it into every structure he builds. On his impressive list are thermal baths to luxuriate in, and a humble chapel worthy of pilgrimage. We speak with the 2009 Pritzker Laureate on page 16.
