Fall's cooler days are perfect for traipsing favourite city spots. This month, we detour through Switzerland's grittier urban quarters to witness a global phenomenon at the local level. It goes something like this: First come the artists and galleries--generally drawn by the cheap rent--followed by the chic boutiques, trendy bars and hip hangouts ... then the mainstream masses move in, causing rents to soar and the artists to move on ... and start the process all over again in a new quarter. We meet some who are leading the current charge, on page 19.

For many of us hailing from English-speaking countries, September is synonymous with back-to-school--regardless of how long ago we may have taken off our graduation caps and gowns.
