Awakened by a Savoyard invasion in the dead of night, citizens of Geneva fought courageously, repelled the attackers, and saved their city from falling to Savoy in 1602. Today, Geneva honours those heroes and salutes its independence with a weekend of commemorative festivities--called the Escalade--each December.
