Awakened by a Savoyard invasion in the dead of night, citizens of Geneva fought courageously, repelled the attackers, and saved their city from falling to Savoy in 1602. Today, Geneva honours those heroes and salutes its independence with a weekend of commemorative festivities--called the Escalade--each December. Join us on page 38 for a preview of this year's highlights, including costumed battle re-enactments featuring muskets and an authentic cannon.

If activities more subdued are on your holiday wish list, you may consider bundling up for a quiet hike among moon shadows and snow-shrouded trees--topped off with fondue by firelight in the Jura (page 44).
