Fresh faces in the Federal Council.

After winning September's closely contested parliamentary vote, debuting Federal Councillors Johann Schneider-Ammann and Simonetta Sommaruga begin their respective terms at the beginning of November. FDP (Free Democratic Party) nominee, Schneider-Ammann, who fills the seat vacated by finance minister Hans-Rudolf Merz, will assume responsibility for the Federal Department of Economic Affairs; while his colleague, SP (Social Democratic Party) candidate Sommeruga, takes Moritz Leuenberger's place on the seven-seat executive, earning the role of Justice Minister.

The parliamentary vote also coincided with a reshuffle within the Federal Council: Current president Doris Leuthard transferred from her role as Minister of Economic Affairs, to replace Moritz Leuenberger as head of the Department for the Environment, Transport and Communications. Meanwhile, Justice Minister, Evelyn Widmer-Schlumpf was appointed head of the Finance Ministry.
