Even though Swiss qualifications are being better recognised and restrictions on working in the EU have been lifted, the youth of Switzerland, looking forward to international work experience are finding it an uphill task due to the economic downturn

"Interest is very high among young people about gaining work experience abroad," says Beatrice Stucki, head of Intermundo, the association for the promotion of youth exchanges in Latin America, Africa and Asia. The organisation emphasises on the importance of cultural exchange or 'soft skills.'

However, warns Urs Stampfli, head of the Careers Guidance Centre in canton Zurich, "Hitchhiking around the world is not at all useful on the labour market, but if someone's CV can show some experience of working for a firm abroad, this can help."
