Need to book a last-minute hotel room in Switzerland this summer holiday season? Based on the latest domestic tourism forecast, you should have no trouble securing a room.

Overnight hotel stays between now and October are expected to decrease 7.2 per cent from the previous year, according to a forecast from the State Secretariat for Economic Affairs (SECO) and BAK Basel Economic Research & Consultancy. This would be the sharpest decline for Swiss hoteliers since 1982.

The forecast cited "turmoil in financial markets triggered by the economic crisis" as the main culprit for the chilly summer tourist season expected. It also said the unfavourable exchange rates between the Swiss franc and the euro, and the franc and the British pound, will likely contribute to the expected decline as well.
