Demise of the double-barrelled name?

A recent vote by the Swiss Senate could spell the end for the double-barrel surname. Senators voted 38 to zero in favour of ending the practice of couples adopting both surnames after marriage. The change would mean that in future, newly married couples would have to choose between taking the surname of one partner as a shared family name; or opting out of having a common name altogether--with both partners retaining their pre-marriage nomenclatures and choosing which one to pass on to any offspring.
