Health insurer CSS says that runaway health costs in Switzerland are forcing it to look to the country's neighbour for cheaper operations.

The Lucerne-based company CSS is looking at cawing out heart bypasses, hysterectomies and hip replacements outside Switzerland as the potential savings are substantial. Citing an instance, orthopaedic surgery alone at the University Hospital in Lausanne costs CHF28,400, while the same operation in the German town of Rheinfelden would cost CHF19,900, including two weeks' recuperation.

Black Forest Recuperation

CSS has already made huge savings by sending patients to hospitals in the German Black Forest for convalescence. But sending patients abroad for surgery poses a problem as Swiss law forbids local insurers from paying for operations outside Switzerland, except in case of emergencies, or if the patient holds additional insurance.
